Supurb Handmade Cigars
The region near Cartagena known as Carmen de Bolívar has
been a major tobacco producing area since long before the appearance of the Spanish
in the New World. The Native Americans of the region were much given to the cultivation
and smoking of tobacco. This leaf was believed to cure illnesses, and was used
as an aid in fortune telling. It was also smoked as a tribute to the gods, and
to celebrate the changing of the seasons. Tobacco was even used in the practice
of magic, much as it is still used by native shamans in the New World.
After the Independence from Spain in the early years of the
19th Century, tobacco from El Carmen de Bolivar began to be
exported to Europe; and by the end of the century a number
of mostly German firms were shipping great quantities, primarily
to Bremen. The predominant variety was the native or black
tobacco.
