Cartagena - City of Gold

We recently had the opportunity to re-visit this lovely city aboard our sailboat VIVA, and stayed at the very upscale Club de Pesca Marina. \r\nOur last visit was in in 2000 while traveling eastbound and we were pleased to note that Cartagena remains the same vibrant, entertaining city we remembered. A multitude of historic sites can be found in an around the old walled city interspersed with museums, galleries and an abundance of world class restaurants. \r\nThere was never a security problem and after several years of increased crime activity in Venezuela we always felt safe here to wander as we pleased. Our trip along the isolated coast was without incident and we once again had a chance to explore some of the beautiful remote coastal anchorages and native villages.

As for shopping, Cartagena has some wonderful bargains. If you are interested in Emeralds, Colombia is still the emerald capital of the world. Be sure to look up Lee Miles at Mr Emerald. Lee is an excellent source for information and purchase of emeralds, in addition to being a walking "visitors bureau" for all of the latest sites and restaurants. He and his wife Pachi were most helpful to us during our one-month stay.

Enjoy.
